 Anti-Virus Software

On this page, we will begin by reviewing the better known anti-virus software packages, some of which are really well known. Some, though well known are not the best programs to buy.

Some well known software, while good at stopping virus attack's, do so at a cost of slowing down your computer. They take up so much resources, that they almost cause as much trouble as they are installed to protect!

Norton anti virus has been around since I started in computers, or at least it seems like it.

I first used Norton  when I got my first PC, around 1990. It did work as advertised, and it was and is very good at finding virus infections on my computer. It also did a good job at intercepting a potential virus infection before it has a chance to install on your computer.

My complaint with this program, is that while running, it uses a lot of your computer's memory and processor power. The result, it slows down your machine and, to me, that is almost as bad as having some viruses on your machine.

Nevertheless, if you have a really powerful machine, Norton is very powerful.

Number two, in my estimation, is McAfee. I used McAfee for many years, and liked it a lot.

It was and still is one of the most effective programs on the market. The company provides updates on a regular basis, and updates are the lifeblood of any protection software.

The programs I mentioned, are all good, but every good program is only considered good as long as someone does not make a program better.

I believe that I discovered a better program about five years ago.

This program is called "NOD32" and was created by a company called ESET.

In the five years I have used it, I have never NEVER been infected by any virus, worm, trojan or any other destrustive process. I have even TRIED, on purpose, to infect my computer while NOD32 was running. I could not do it without turning off the program.

It has very advanced processes it calls "Threat Sense" which can detect a virus even if they have not discovered it yet.

Another of my favorite aspects for NOD32, are that it uses only a fraction of the memory and processor resources. That translates to faster computing for me.

Finally, NOD32 updates itself automatically, sometimes several times a day, as long as your computer is online.

If you are on a slower dialup connection, it updates when you log on to the net.

This is, to me, the best choice for a computer virus protection software.
